The Head Torch: An Adventurer’s Best Friend

The head torch is a simple yet brilliant tool.  Designed to be worn around the head, this type of torch is completely hands-free.  This gives adventurers more latitude when traveling through the dark.   It is also convenient in stationary situations.  For example, imagine campers relaxing in a 4 man tent.  With this type of torch, they do not have to fumble over a flash light.  As long as the main wearer stays in place, the campers can enjoy a stable source of illumination.  In fact, depending on the type of torch they purchased, this light could last for hours on end.

There are three basic types of head torches.  They include all-purpose torches, high power torches and emergency torches.  All-purposes torches tend to be the best choice for campers and adventurers.  They provide short and long-range lighting, thanks to a special illumination setting.  High-power torches are best for cavers or scuba divers, as they can light from very long distances.  The best ones can light over 200 feet.  This is the complete opposite of the emergency torch.   Its lightweight nature limits how far it can shine.  However, it can still come in handy during situations where one cannot be weighed down by heavy gear.

In terms of the illumination itself, head torches use filament or LED bulbs.  Filament bulbs offer the brightest illumination, making it the best choice for short-distance lighting.  However, they are not best for other situations because the bulbs run out so quickly.  This leaves only one other option: the LED head torch.  Since it uses LED technology, these torches can shine up to 229 feet.  They also last longer.  While a filament torch might last a few hundred hours, a LED head torch can last for thousands.

Do not get mislead, though.  Whether you are using a filament or an LED bulb, you must also consider your source of power.  The most convenient involves using a rechargeable battery.  At full power, the battery can last for hours without needing to be recharged.   Unfortunately, there is a limit to how long these batteries will last.  After a few hundred hours of use, the battery might have to be replaced altogether.  This can be very expensive, even if the battery is still being manufactured.  If the battery is no longer distributed, the price goes up higher.  For this reason, many opt to get head torches powered by traditional batteries.

The Energizer head torch is a popular example.  It comes distributed with 4 or 6 LED bulbs.  Both use three AAA batteries, but the 6-bulb Energizer torch lasts longer.  It shines for 50 hours straight before needing battery replacement.  It also comes with two red LED bulbs for easier night vision.  In contrast, the 4-bulb Energizer torch lasts for 38 hours and only offers white illumination.  However, its cheaper price might make it more attractive for certain buyers.

The Petzl head torch is another brand that uses traditional batteries for power.  They offer torches with 2 to 4 LED bulbs.  All of them use 3 AAA batteries, (which are usually included with the torch).   However, the 4-bulb Petzl torch offers the longest illumination, as it can light for 150 hours.  It also has the capacity to use continuous or flashing light, an ability that is very helpful in certain situations.  Combine this with its water-resistance, tiltable body and 213-foot lighting distance and you have the perfect head torch for occupational use.

In conclusion, if you plan on traveling or relaxing in a dark area, the head torch is something you cannot live without.  This is especially true if you get long-lasting varieties, such as a 6-bulb Energizer torch or a 4-bulb Petzl torch.  Even torches with filament bulbs can be useful, depending on what you are doing.  Just make sure you get the best one for your situation, as you want the most powerful torch your budget can handle.  Doing otherwise could result in you being stranded in the dark!
